Mercedes Schlapp, the White House communication strategist, is a difficult task. She has to deal with a president who serves as his own communications director as well as numerous legal fights that can throw off the White House's strategy for messaging as well as a host of Cabinet secretaries embroiled in their own disputes. Schlapp, however, has never lost focus on her role. She is in close contact in conjunction with White House political affairs and legislative teams and policy shops and the overall communications team to coordinate the policy roll-out. To date, her focus has been issues such as security in schools, the opioid epidemic, infrastructure, trade, and other related topics. She doesn't interact with reporters often in her current role. Her name was a big draw after being named an option to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. The battle has turned out to be ugly.Mercedes Schlapp doesn't have an easy gig as the White House strategic communications adviser. It's not an easy task to have Mercedes Schlapp as the White House's communications strategic advisor. She's faced with numerous challenges, for instance as being the President's communications director, and serves as his communication director. Schlapp has kept her eye on the target, and has been coordinating the implementation of policy along with White House staff from the department of legislative and political affairs and the policy shop, in addition to broader communication. She has focused on topics such as security at schools, opioids, infrastructure, as well as trade. The position she holds, however, means that Schlapp does not have contact with many reporters. She did draw a flurry of attention in March after her name was suggested as a contender to replace Hope Hicks as communications director. It was a tense battle. The ally of Schlapp's, Tony Sayegh, and an opponent with the same name, Tony, started jousting with each other in the news. Schlapp called Sayegh after The Washington Examiner printed a bad article about the former president.
